Yit Hooi Cafe (or Kedai Kopi Yit Hooi) is a traditional Penang kopitiam (coffee shop) located right at the traffic light junction of Jalan Jelutong and Jalan Sungai Pinang (Address: 56, Jalan Jelutong, 11600 Georgetown, Penang). It is about 5 minutes’ walk from the Toyota Service Centre (Sungai Pinang branch), and the Hyundai Penang Service Centre (sharing the building with Auto Bavaria) is right across the street.
Although it is a small coffee shop, there are a number of food choices at Yit Hooi Cafe. The curry mee is popular with the regulars here. It is tasty and is not too oily compared to other stalls. There are also stalls selling chee cheong fun, roasted duck rice and Hokkien Char (Hokkien-style fried noodles). The kopi-o (Malaysian black coffee) here is aromatic and is a must-have, as they roast their own coffee beans. And don’t forget the half boiled eggs and bread toast.
The dining area at Yit Hooi Cafe is quite comfortable. Customers can dine at the shop itself or at tables laid out at the front of the shop house beside it. Most of the regulars here are either locals or people who work nearby. Also, it is a strategic place to have a quick bite for those servicing their cars at the nearby Toyota and Hyundai service centres.
