The nearest zoo to Penang is the Taiping Zoo. It is about 100 kilometres from the Penang Island. Driving from Georgetown, Penang to the Taiping Zoo takes about 1 hour and 25 minutes. The Taiping Zoo & Night Safari opens every day, from 8.30 AM to 6.00 PM. The Night Safari opens from 8.00 PM to 11.00 PM. The zoo is also known as Taman Mergastua Sultan Idris Shah.
The Taiping Zoo is a relatively small zoo. It has the usual array of animals that you would expect to see at a zoo, while providing a nice nature walk in a green environment. Animals you can see at the Taiping Zoo include the orang utan, tiger, lion, elephant, giraffe, bear, deer, crocodile, hippopotamus, rhinoceros, wallaby, emu, swan, birds, and others.
Within the zoo, there are trams that you can hop on/off as you go through the zoo. But, it is best to walk in order to see the animals clearly while enjoying nature. Walking through the Taiping Zoo typically takes about 2 1/2 hours.
There is also a playground in the zoo, but it looks a little worn out.
