Do you know that the oldest Malay school in Malaysia is located in Penang? I got to know about this when driving along Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah one day. The school, Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Gelugor is located along Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah. It proudly proclaims that it is “Sekolah Melayu Tertua Di Malaysia” (oldest Malay school in Malaysia). The address of the school is Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, Kampung Gelugor, 11700 Gelugor, Penang (Tel: 04-6566624).
Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Gelugor was founded in 1826 by David Brown (a Scotsman). It started from a small barn, and initially provides Islamic classes, concentrating on the Quran, Fardu Ain, and Jawi. Fast forward to today, 191 years later, Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Gelugor now has 4-storey buildings equipped with the latest learning facilities. The school has certainly come a long way all these years.
