In Mainland Penang, Bukit Tambun is a popular place for seafood. What about the Penang Island? Are there any good seafood restaurants on Penang Island? My personal favourite is Hai Boey Seafood Restaurant in Gertak Sanggul, Teluk Kumbar.
There are many varieties of seafood served at Hai Boey Seafood Restaurant. There are live fish, crabs, lobsters, etc. that are kept in aquariums, so you can get really fresh seafood. For the live seafood, the restaurant is kind enough to separate the seafood costs from the “cooking service” cost, so you can save on GST (Goods & Services Tax) – live seafood are not subjected to GST.
My favourite dish at Hai Boey Seafood Restaurant is undoubtedly the steamed grouper fish in a big claypot. The fish is fresh, and the sauce is tasty. Another special dish that I had here before was the prawn sashimi, where the prawn is sliced thinly and placed on a plate of ice – cold, fresh, and nice. The prawn’s sizable head will later be cooked together with flat noodles (hor fun).
Hai Boey Seafood Restaurant is located by the seaside. This creates the perfect setting for having a Penang seafood meal. Customers can stroll along the beach while waiting for their food to be served (or after the meal, of course). This itself makes it worth the hassle to go to Teluk Kumbar, all the way from Georgetown.
