Gurney Food Hall is the new food court within Gurney Plaza, officially launched on 15 October 2020. It is located on the 4th floor of Gurney Plaza.
The Gurney Food Hall was designed to reflect the various elements found in Penang, starting with the Esplanade which symbolizes the seaside, the Port which symbolizes the trading market, the industrial zone of Bayan Lepas, all the way to the natural greeneries in Penang. Based on these, the food court has 4 distinct sections: The Pier, The Port, The Palm & The Patio. I didn’t realize this until I read the background story though, as it is probably not obvious to the casual visitor. The information on the design concept is displayed near the entrance.
The food court itself is big and spacious. There are ample tables/seats in the dining area to cater for a large number of people. The place feels comfortable even during the busy lunch and dinner hours.
As for food stalls, there are lots of them, ranging from the local Penang hawker food to Western delights. The quality of food here is pretty good too (based on shopping mall food court standard, of course).
The stalls use the wireless buzzer to notify customers when their orders are ready. This is a good system which allows customers to wait at their own tables, instead of crowding at the stalls.
Overall, Gurney Food Hall is probably the current best shopping mall food court in Penang. It definitely brings great convenience to the shoppers at Gurney Plaza.
