Looking for good Japanese restaurant in the Gelugor area? Well, one place I know of is Goku Sen Japanese Cafe & Bar in Udini Square. Udini Square is a shopping complex near Tesco Jelutong and HomePro Penang. There is a “link bridge” connecting Udini Square and Tesco Jelutong. Coming from Tesco Jelutong, you will see Goku Sen Restaurant right in front of the “link bridge”.
Goku Sen Restaurant serves many of the usual Japanese dishes, including sushi, ramen, grilled fish (salmon, mackerel, sword fish), Japanese curry dishes, and others. My favourite dishes here are the pork ramen and the teriyaki chicken rice. There is also a cold tofu salad dish served with special peanut butter sauce that is pretty good.
The seating area in Goku Sen Restaurant is quite compact. It can get quite noisy when there are lots of customers. I normally go there during off-peak hour, where you will feel that it is a small and cozy restaurant. As the parking rate at Udini Square is RM 1 for the first 3 hours, the restaurant provides a RM 1 rebate to customers. So, the restaurant technically pays the parking fee for you when you dine here.
