Kopi Luwak, or Civet Coffee is arguably the most expensive coffee in the world. It originated from Indonesia, but today, there are also civet coffee that are produced in the Philippines and Vietnam. In Penang, there is a cafe in Georgetown which specializes in serving kopi luwak. The cafe is aptly named Kopi Loewak (Address: 7, Lebuh Armenian, 10200 Georgetown, Penang. Tel: 04-2610326). It is situated in the heart of the Georgetown UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Kopi Loewak cafe is housed in a traditional shop house. Its interior is decorated with coffee-making equipment, giving a sense of a unique coffee place. Kopi luwak is the main coffee on the menu, priced at RM38 for a cup of hand-brewed luwak coffee and RM50 for the Ice-Drip luwak – much more expensive than Starbucks. The hand-brewed kopi luwak has a stronger coffee taste compared to the ice-drip luwak. Both are nice though.
Customers ordering the hand-brewed luwak coffee will get to see a demonstration of the brewing process. The equipment used to brew the coffee is quite unique.
Besides kopi luwak, the cafe also serves other types of coffee and cakes. Customers can also purchase the kopi luwak beans and brewing equipment at the cafe.
If you are visiting the Georgetown UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kopi Loewak cafe is a nice place to stop by and enjoy a cup of special coffee. Here is the location of the cafe in Google Maps:
