Recently, I accidentally discovered a stall specializing in duck meat koay teow th’ng (or duck meat koay teow soup) in Lebuh Melayu, Georgetown, Penang. I was actually on my way to Ping Hooi Cafe for a plate of Tiger Char Koay Teow, when I came across the aromatic smell of the duck meat koay teow th’ng at 113 Coffee Shop (or Kedai Makanan & Minuman Satu Satu Tiga in the Malay language).
The number 113 comes from the coffee shop’s address: 113, Lebuh Melayu, 10300 Georgetown, Penang. The 113 Coffee Shop is located right behind Ping Hooi Cafe, near the intersection of Lebuh Melayu and Lebuh Carnavon. I decided to give the duck meat koay teow th’ng a try.
The shop was quite crowded, but I was able to find a table. I proceeded to order a bowl of duck meat koay teow th’ng, and a small plate of duck intestines. The duck meat koay teow th’ng has a strong flavour, and more importantly, it was delicious. Previously, I had tried duck meat koay teow th’ng at the Pulau Tikus Market in the evening, but I didn’t recall it having a strong flavour like this. The strong flavour definitely makes it special. The duck intestines was crunchy, and was served together with bean sprouts.
The 113 Duck Meat Koay Teow Th’ng stall offers many add-on choices, including pig intestines, green vegetables, eggs, and fish balls. In addition to koay teow th’ng, the stall also serves duck meat koay chap. I did not try the koay chap, but will probably do that someday.
I enjoyed the meal at 113 Duck Meat Koay Teow Th’ng very much. It is definitely something special in the Penang food scene.
